Groundbreaking ceremony for the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP)

Vienna, 13th March 2015 – ATP Vienna has been commissioned by the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim to realize a state-of-the-art life sciences building for molecular research. An official groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of client representatives and politicians.

Using a model to outline the design idea, ATP’s partner in Vienna Horst Reiner explained how “ATP develops aesthetically innovative projects in an interdisciplinary and simultaneous design process. In the case of the new building for the IMP a major theme is the spatial connection of the horizontal functions using a vertical atrium as a space for communication and movement”. The rigid grid of the façade resembles a representation of DNA decoding from the field of cellular research. The rhythm is broken by a “pathological crack” in the center of the building which hints at the imperfect structure of cells and the future role of the building in the field of cancer research.

Horst Reiner symbolically presented the client with a USB stick containing all the data about the building which has already been integrally designed and virtually built with the help of BIM (Building Information Modeling).
