Laying of the Foundation Stone for LAB 7 at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria
Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) - Laying of the Foundation Stone for LAB 7
The renowned campus for basic scientific research and postgraduate education in Klosterneuburg near Vienna is becoming richer with an innovative, urban, and sustainable expansion. With around 25,000 m² of gross floor area and a planned completion by 2028, LAB 7 is a substantial part of the third expansion stage of IST Austria until 2036.
In the 2022 competition, we impressed with a design that creatively translates the values of the institute – openness, communication, and future viability – and focuses on high functionality and spatial efficiency of the buildings. The new components – two laboratory buildings, an office building, a cafeteria, a learning center, and a parking garage – integrate into the existing campus and strengthen its identity.
The groundbreaking for Laboratory Building 7 is an initial milestone in the campus expansion, aiming to provide an optimal environment for up to 1,500 researchers by 2036 and promote scientific discourse.
The various research areas support the respective user requirements and are well interconnected. The surrounding natural environment is integrated into the new area, ensuring a high quality of stay. A platform serves as a link between the buildings, providing intuitive orientation on the campus. At the same time, it creates an attractive area for communication and exchange, serving the users as a recreational space.

We are pleased to accompany LAB 7 in the realization phase as an integrated designer, following our success in the competition. Our aim is to create an environment for top performance in studies and research, while also meeting the highest ecological standards.
