Three Awards for EPO Vienna
Sustainable Renovation of the European Patent Office Recognized
The office building of the European Patent Office in Vienna received three awards for its pioneering revitalization in June 2025: the Austrian Concrete Award (Recognition), the Vienna Urban Renewal Award (Silver), and the 'gebaut 2024' Award.
When the office building of the European Patent Office in Vienna, built in 1972, reached the end of its operational life, the European Patent Office made a forward-looking decision to renovate instead of demolish. We transformed the existing building into a state-of-the-art 'Green Hub' with the highest standards of sustainability, resource conservation, and energy efficiency. With the aimed BREEAM certification 'Outstanding,' the building targets the highest rating in the DACH region to date. The project has now received three awards for its exemplary revitalization:
Austrian Concrete Award (Recognition)
The Austrian Concrete Award, awarded by Beton Dialog Österreich (BDÖ), recognizes the innovative use of concrete in architecture. The award aims to highlight the potential of concrete as a key driver for circular, efficient, and climate-friendly construction and to make the industry's progress in this context visible.
The award was granted for the second time in 2025. Out of 82 submitted construction projects, winners were selected in the categories of residential construction, educational and administrative buildings, and revitalization, and a recognition was awarded. The European Patent Office in Vienna received the recognition award in the category of revitalization.
The European Patent Office in Vienna impressed with the exemplary treatment of an existing building from the 1970s. This project vividly illustrates how a concrete skeleton structure can be transformed to be future-proof.

37th Vienna Urban Renewal Award (Silver)
The Urban Renewal Award, presented by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce's construction branch in Vienna, in cooperation with the City of Vienna, honors outstanding renovation and revitalization projects – aiming to set an example for sustainable and city-shaping development. Out of a total of 33 submissions, three projects were awarded the "Viennese Quality Brick" – in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The European Patent Office in Vienna was honored with Silver.
The Vienna Urban Renewal Award is an expression of the quality with which construction, renovation, and forward-thinking are carried out in our city. The awarded projects exemplify the innovative power of Vienna's construction industry and the respectful handling of historical building substance.
