The European Patent Office in Vienna has been awarded the ICONIC AWARD. The German Design Council - Rat für Formgebung recognized the revitalized office building as a 'Winner' in the Architecture category.

ATP architekten ingenieure has once again received the prestigious ICONIC AWARD – this time for the revitalization project European Patent Office Vienna. When the office building, constructed in 1972, reached the end of its service life, the European Patent Office made a forward-looking decision against demolition and in favor of a comprehensive renovation. Following a successful competition win in 2021, ATP and ATP sustain transformed the existing building into a state-of-the-art 'Green Hub' – with the highest standards of sustainability, resource conservation, and energy efficiency.

Sustainable Transformation of an Existing Building
The goal of the comprehensive renovation was ambitious: to create a CO2-neutral, modern, and light-filled office building over its entire life cycle. The building responds to its historical location – between the UNESCO World Heritage site of Belvedere Palace with its park, the Salesian Convent, and the Botanical Garden – and brings the surrounding park landscape inside the building. With the architectural gesture of a delicate transparent wooden facade, the building integrates the Genius Loci and provides access to the natural environment on each floor.
In addition to the functional redesign in line with user requirements, the building had to undergo comprehensive modernization, particularly in terms of structure, fire protection, security systems, and energy supply. The use of recyclable materials, a highly efficient wooden element facade, ecological rainwater use, acoustic climate panels for heating and cooling, and the use of renewable energies led to the 'Outstanding' BREEAM certification. The building thus achieves the highest rating to date in the DACH region.
