New center for Thon
1st prize in urban planning ideas competition
Nuremburg-Thon, 24.06.2016 – A bidder consortium consisting of ATP Munich and the landscape architects Logo verde won 1st prize in the urban planning ideas competition for the new center of Nuremburg’s Thon district. The central objective of the public urban design competition was to develop an appropriate overall concept for a new district center in the city’s north-western suburbs. The key challenges were to create an entrance ensemble for the district and a number of diverse and usable public spaces.
ATP Munich’s Head of Design Florian Beck spoke about the concept behind the winning project. “The aim of the urban remodeling was to invigorate the entrance to the district and create high-quality public spaces. It was essential to us that the concept should establish a bridge with Thon’s barely recognizable yet still very present historic center.”
According to the competition jury, ATP’s winning design is “carefully developed, while the convincing higher-level spatial system, the well-located district square and the perfect sense of scale represent a major contribution to the solution of the design challenge which lies at the heart of the competition.”
ATP architects engineers develops competition entries in its own D&R studios. Here, architects and engineers design and research in an exclusively interdisciplinary process in cooperation with universities and other external partners. In their role as incubators these D&R Studios enrich ATP’s daily integrated design work.
