Hamburg, 26th August 2023 – Hamburg’s HOCHBAHN AG organized a limited competition for the design of a forward-looking mobility hub at Veddel Railway Station. ATP architects engineers, Hamburg, was awarded 2nd prize for its concept for a thoroughly innovative and energy-efficient building type. The design meets not only the requirements for a clearly-structured mobility center but also includes a range of leisure and shopping options that combine to offer a high quality of experience for the people who use the mobility facilities on a daily basis.
“We wanted to create not only a public place that shows the way ahead for the new world of mobility, but also an environmentally-friendly and high-quality space, in which people enjoy coming together and staying awhile,” saysAlexander Montero, Head of Design of ATP Hamburg, explaining the basic idea.
In ATP’s concept, the site of around 19,000 m2 is occupied by a four-story operating center for electric buses, administrative and commercial space, a five-story hotel with publicly accessible roof terrace, and an office and medical center. The centerpiece of the mobility hub is the bus interchange. The vertical slats and extensive planting of the façade create a uniform and recognizable appearance for the various elements. The very clear structuring of the project makes it easier to use the various mobility options.
In addition to this, a broad spectrum of energy and resource-saving measures was integrated into the concept, from the energy-efficient façade via the photovoltaic plant to the reuse of rainwater. The many islands of greenery, which also promote biodiversity, are particularly prominent.
