Klagenfurt, 4th November 2021 – The headquarters of the timber company Theurl, which were integrally designed by ATP architects engineers, have won this year’s Carinthian Timber Construction Prize.
The office building was submitted in the “commercial buildings” category, in which 90 projects were submitted and 28 received a nomination. “Who, if not a timber building company, is predestined to turn the expansion of their own company headquarters into a flagship project for the potential of contemporary timber architecture,” wrote the jury in awarding the prize.
The cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements used in the building were manufactured just 200 meters away in the production building of the complex. It’s hard to be more sustainable than that! This means that the climate and the environment are the winners – and now the designers and the client, too: “The timber surfaces from the company’s own production plant and the reserved yet elegant interior design combine with the lofty spaces and an open office layout, which reinforces the potential for future restructuring, to create a generous sense of space and working environment. Overall, this is an ideal building for state-of-the-art administration and, at the same time, the perfect advertisement for timber construction,” continued the jury.
The sustainable use of the raw material wood was central to both the design and construction processes: With the exception of the reinforced concrete stair, the entire building is made of wood. With its striking slats, the façade provides a spectacular external appearance, while the omnipresent timber of the interior establishes a pleasant climate and warm atmosphere. And, in addition to this, the building creates a strong sense of identity amongst the employees – because they work surrounded by the fruit of their own labors.
