Ljubljana/London, 8th June 2021 – Modern, unique architecture, a particularly high level of sustainability and an extraordinary shopping and leisure offering were the qualities identified by an international expert jury in the ALEJA Shopping Center in Ljubljana (Slovenia), which was integrally designed by ATP Innsbruck. The district center, which opened in 2020, is one of four projects nominated for the Global RLI Award 2021 in the category “International Shopping Centre – New Build”.
ALEJA integrates the genius loci of the city into the modern, highly-functional retail architecture. The interiors reflect the urban-poetic charm of central Ljubljana, while the appearance and form are inspired by the city’s heraldic animal. With its diamond-shaped metallic and colored-glass shingles the façade recalls a dragon’s skin while also meeting ambitious esthetic, lighting, and energy objectives. The 6,200 m2 leisure, sport, and recreation zone and a trendy food court provide a spectacular world of experiences with high-quality public spaces that it offers back to the district of Šiška.
The architect Philipp Pfister, ATP’s Lead Project Manager, explains the concept behind the district center: “Retail centers will only have a future if they become part of the city. At ALEJA, we succeeded in interweaving highly efficient retail architecture with the beauties of the city and, in combination with the notion of the urban district, created a multifunctional meeting point with a great visitor experience and high quality spaces.”
The Global RLI (Retail & Leisure International) Awards have honored visionaries in the retail and leisure worlds for the past 15 years. This year, the jury has selected global shopping and leisure destinations for consideration in 13 categories. In the category “International Shopping Centre – New Build”, the BEO Shopping Center in Belgrade (Serbia), the InCity Mall in Ningbo Haishu (China), and the Shopping Center Maximo in Rome (Italy) have been nominated alongside ALEJA. The awards will be presented as part of a hybrid event with live ceremony in London together with an online component on 23rd September 2021.
