ATP kfp architects engineers won the invited competition for a retirement home with medical center.
The competition called for the design of a building that was optimized in terms of urban design, architecture and operations and that met the highest spatial planning, cost effectiveness and sustainability standards. ATP kfp Zurich won the competition process in June 2013 with a concept featuring flexible apartment plans and an innovative approach to external spaces.
Consisting of a series of elements, the multifunctional complex offers a range of apartments of varying sizes, communal spaces and a publically accessible medical center (“Doctors’ Center”). The new building and the perpendicular northern element form a y-shaped complex interspersed with a range of external spaces: the two western elements combine with the adjacent shopping center to create an enclosed entrance square. To the east, the residential building “embraces” a park which melts into the landscape as a series of terraces. The northern element protects the complex from the noise of the major road and rail tracks.
The external appearance makes a play of contrasts and opposites. A closed, solid plaster façade contrasts with the generously open timber-clad balconies and window openings.
