Top 5 / WIN Awards Erlkönig, Innsbruck, AT
"Erlkönig" selected as one of the world's five most beautiful bars at the WIN Awards '13.
The task for the designers was to revitalize an empty shop in the heart of Innsbruck and use the historical vaults to create a bar which is open all day. The bar was successfully integrated into the historical fabric in such a way that only minimum adaptation of the existing structure was required while the texture and charisma of the space were retained. Noble materials combined with the new interior elements from regional nutwood and the fine textiles and surfaces strengthen the contrast with the historic building substance and create a unique spatial and haptic flair. A sophisticated lighting concept establishes a range of contrasting lighting atmospheres for different times of the day and night.
The "WIN Awards" are part of the "World Architecture News (WAN) Awards", the largest global architecture and design awards program. The best examples of architecture and design work will be selected this year by an international jury (http://www.wantoday.com/win_comm_2013/index.html) of leading figures from the sector including Sir Terence Conran (Founder and Chairman of the Conran Group), Adrian Griffiths (Director of Chapman Taylor) and Lee Hallman (Head of Interiors, Foster & Partners).
According to the jury report: “Erlkönig by ATP Sphere GmbH was chosen by the judges for its use of the existing historical building to create a warm and inviting bar within constraints. The graphics and furniture selection used juxtaposed against arches and vaults led the judges to shortlisting the project.”
