In Dialogue between Old and New
Competition Concept: Administrative Building of Regionalwerke Baden (RWB)
Fit for the future: The RWB administrative building is to be expanded and renovated – with a clear, contemporary architectural language and an open space that combines orientation, address formation, and a high-quality stay.

The Regionalwerke Baden need more space – for employees and to prepare for the challenges of the future. By adding another floor and renovating the existing building from the 1930s, additional space will be created without losing the identity of the protected architectural monument. At the same time, a new parking level for company vehicles will be integrated under the courtyard.
The aim of our design is to create a harmonious architectural dialogue between the existing structure, the extension, and the exterior space through respectful treatment of the historical building fabric.
Identity-Building Architecture
The building in the style of the "New Objectivity" sees itself as a gateway to the city and forms a striking connecting axis to the historical city center. With the precisely placed timber addition with aluminum cladding, the ensemble gains a new visibility and strengthens its identity as the entrance to the city.
The extension is clearly readable as contemporary and simultaneously enters into a respectful dialogue with the distinct concrete facade of the existing building. An encircling cornice and clear frame elements define the interface between old and new – the original architecture remains legible, but is further developed and aesthetically enhanced by the addition.
Open Space as a Connecting Element
A central part of the design is the reorganization of the outdoor spaces. The new outdoor space is divided into two clearly defined areas: a generous, identity-conferring forecourt facing the street enhances the building's public presence, provides orientation in the bustling station environment, and acts as a filter between the city and the world of work.
In contrast, a lowered, intimate courtyard opens up in the rear area. This area is directly connected to the uses on the ground floor and allows for versatile usage – both functionally and atmospherically. Tall and multi-stemmed trees create a bright, calm atmosphere and provide a soothing contrast to the rigidity of the building volumes.
