Nuremberg North Hospital

Paracelsus Medical University with renovation of the Pathology Department

The building is used by both the Nuremberg Hospital and the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU). Therefore, the new and old buildings were zoned without disrupting the functional and spatial unity.

The architecture transforms the range of specialist units into a spatial organization while connecting these at all levels with the help of a main circulation axis. To the north this opens up to second floor level in the form of a void, creating an inviting entrance.

A particular challenge during the restructuring of the building was presented by the requirement to separate the use areas and sub-divide the old and new buildings while still ensuring that functional relationships were maintained. The ground floor level is home to the chapel of rest and the post-mortem areas of the Pathology Department as well as the Anatomy Department of PMU. The new building contains the spaces for learning, which are designed as an open spatial system, the management suite of the institute, and the offices of the study center while the remodeled old building contains the laboratories, offices, and archive of the Pathology Department.
