Refurbishment with Sensitivity
East Wing A, University Hospital Zurich Bed House
Supportive and Healing: With the renovation of Wings East 1-3 of the University Hospital Zurich, a modern pulmonology ward was created – balancing contemporary functionality and listed building substance.

The University Hospital Zurich is continuously developing its campus to meet the increasing demands of modern medicine and care. After ATP had already been commissioned with a comprehensive renovation in 2011–2014, the planning team took on the reorganization and renovation of the OST 1–3 wing as part of the overall renovation of the listed building. The task was to convert areas of the cardiology clinic formerly used as offices and examination rooms into a modern standard care ward, thereby creating additional capacity for pulmonology.
In Harmony with the Monument
The east wing, built in 1950, is listed in the inventory of buildings worthy of protection by the Zurich Cantonal Monument Preservation Authority. Great sensitivity and careful intervention were therefore required for every planning decision. The aim of the planning process was to preserve the historical qualities of the building while meeting the functional, technical, and spatial requirements of a modern nursing station.
Working in close collaboration, ATP took on the planning of the architecture, structural engineering, construction management, and coordination with external specialist planners for building services. Close coordination with the client and the early involvement of users—nursing staff and doctors—in regular workshops ensured that the planning was consistently aligned with the processes and needs of the clinic's operations.
Spaces that Heal
A standard care ward with a total of 27 beds was created on floor A. All building services were completely renovated and adapted to the current regulations and guidelines of the University Hospital of Zurich. The floor plan organization follows clear, functional processes and supports efficient care procedures.
In terms of design, the interior renovation is based on the already renovated floors B, C, and D. A restrained, neutral color and material palette characterizes the ward and creates a calm, pleasant atmosphere for patients and staff. Wooden surfaces on the walls add subtle accents and reference the historic building fabric as well as the listed components such as ceilings, doors, and windows. The result is a balanced interplay between the existing structure and contemporary interior design.
