Expansion and Renovation of the Canteen Stadtwerke Rostock AG
Award in VgV tendering process: The expansion will transform the company canteen of Stadtwerke Rostock into a multifunctional space for catering, exchange, and events. The available spaces will be repurposed as a future-oriented New Work workspace. New and existing areas will be functionally, spatially, and organizationally restructured – all while operations continue.
The Stadtwerke Rostock are developing their site due to increased capacity requirements and new functional needs, and have therefore created a comprehensive preliminary design for space organization, workplace structure, and reorganization of the canteen. The object of the advertised VgV procedure was the planning development and implementation of this preliminary design – ATP Nuremberg was awarded the contract.
The aim of our concept is to restructure the canteen spatially and organizationally and create a new identity-building meeting point. At the same time, the existing canteen areas on the upper floor are being transformed into a future-proof working environment based on the New Work principles.

The key was not just to stack functions, but to intelligently zone them: the lively use of the canteen complements concentrated office and seminar use without impairing each other.

Building During Ongoing Operation – Precisely Coordinated
The realization takes place while the canteen is still operating. Temporary facade openings, sensitive kitchen areas, and the separation of the construction site and operating areas require precise planning. A high degree of prefabrication and modular elements shorten assembly times and minimize noisy work on-site. The construction execution is organized in clearly defined stages, complemented by dust protection measures and coordinated logistics concepts.
Through the consistent BIM-based planning in a shared, cloud-supported model, collisions can be detected early, construction statuses simulated, and interfaces precisely coordinated. Model-based updates of schedule and cost developments form the basis for sound decisions.
Multifunctional Canteen as a Vibrant Meeting Place
The extension of the canteen comprises a new construction of around 420 m² on the ground floor. The new dining hall will offer approximately 215 seats in the future and is designed to be flexible, divisible into two to three event rooms. The middle area can additionally be used as a connecting foyer. Mobile partition systems, integrated presentation technology, and clearly defined spatial zones enable versatile use – from daily canteen operations to internal events and workshops.
A central design approach is the reorganization of internal processes. By compactly rearranging the Freeflow area, creating an internal buffer zone, and ensuring a clear separation of circulation, dispensing, and seating areas, future processes will be more efficient and structured. Concurrently, kitchen logistics are reorganized and tailored to the changed dispensing situation.
From Existing to New-Work Working Environment
With the relocation of the canteen, around 520 m² of new space for office and seminar areas are created on the upper floor. The New-Work concept is based on connected work zones along the facade, flexibly usable seminar areas, and central communication spaces. The spatial structure is deliberately open and adaptable, supporting different forms of work – from focused work to informal exchange. Connectable seminar rooms and mobile furniture enable multifunctional use beyond everyday work. Abundant daylight, natural materials, and greenery shape the modern and high-quality work atmosphere.
