Hospital reimagined
Diakonie Kliniken in Zschadraß
The careful renovation of a specialist hospital for psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neurology combines historic building substance with modern requirements. New pathways, flexible spatial concepts, and a functional new building strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and patient orientation.

The renovation of a partially listed specialist hospital for psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neurology with around 40 buildings included, on the one hand, a development concept that consolidates the functions distributed throughout the entire area into functional units and promotes short pedestrian connections and interdisciplinary collaboration. On the other hand, renovation and construction work were necessary for buildings A6, B5, as well as the adaptation and preservation of the psychiatry building (B20). In a second construction phase, a partial replacement building for neurology (B21) was built, completing the architectural and functional goals for the specialist hospital.
Psychiatry
The historical character of the heritage building, a standalone within the overall complex with a pavilion-like structure and a central foyer with a historical glass ceiling, received a contemporary translation. The conversion takes into account the requirements of psychiatric work, flexible design of patient living areas, and effective operations. Varying degrees of privacy (large groups, small groups, individual) allow for complete retreat possibilities and interaction with other patients.
Neurology
The three-story partial replacement building between psychiatry and the residential development to the north is designed as a triad, thereby consistently separating outpatient and inpatient traffic routes. The underground connection to psychiatry allows discreet internal supply and disposal traffic. Located at the entrance, the emergency room is separated from visitor and patient traffic. The on the upper floor features a care station with 35 beds complemented by rooms for chaplaincy, meetings, on-call services, and a library.
