ATP is awarded 2nd prize (ex aequo) in an open, two-stage realization competition, 2020
via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft mbH organized a two-stage realization competition for the design of its new “floating” headquarters. This was to offer optimum functionality and energy efficiency, while also being harmoniously integrated into the cityscape of Vienna’s Handelskai. The design by the D&R Studio of ATP Innsbruck was awarded 2nd prize (ex aequo).
Headquarters with the flair of a cruise ship
The office ship, which consists of two elegant and abstract floating volumes that are connected by bridges, lies at anchor “like a secretive vessel”. It is notable for the ship-like combination of excellent vertical circulation with a connecting, upper-level ship’s deck. The façade of photovoltaic impact panes, which absorb the reflections from the water, transforms the object into a shimmering high-tech landmark, while the interior is notable for the comfortable atmosphere generated by its timber finishes. Three central, oval cores break open the orthogonal nature of the interior, offer clear orientation, and concentrate the movement of people. The main landing stage provides a link between the riverbank and the generous foyer, with its infopoint, bar, and communication islands. This central meeting point with the “flair of a cruise ship” also offers access to the seminar area, which has a direct vertical link with the sundeck via the oval. Internal service areas such as the cafeteria and meeting areas, which act as an internal hub for the office areas, are positioned directly above this foyer.
The prize jury lavished particular praise upon the design of the elliptical cores: “Despite the simplicity of their geometry, the choice of these cores reveals a precise and open spatial structure, whose neutrality does justice to the desire for openness and flexibility, without descending to the banal.”
