1st prize, realization competition

The joint venture partners ATP Vienna, Hinterwirth Architekten, and ATP sustain convinced the jury with their design for an office and commercial building on the Port of Linz.

Working in an integrated cooperative process, the team developed an overall concept that combined cost effectiveness and sustainability. While its upper levels are occupied by offices the building opens up on the ground floor to allow buses and trains to pass through. The adjacent commercial space can be divided up flexibly according to demand.

Two “cut-outs” in the building, whose large areas of glazing are uninterrupted by the slats that envelop the façade, ensure both comfortable light levels in the offices and impressive views of the surroundings. One cut-out is oriented towards the green landscape of the Danube while the second offers a distant view of the city center.

Load-bearing façade ensures optimum flexibility
Due to the fact that the competition organizers paid great attention to the flexibility of the office use the design team developed a special load-bearing façade solution. “The virtually column-free structure enables us to almost perfectly meet the requirement for optimum flexibility in the use of the office space”, explains Dario Travaš, Head of Design of ATP Vienna.

The resulting floor plan offers the opportunity to provide any combination of individual, combi or even open space offices in a wide range of sizes. The design of the façade was inspired by the waves washing along the Danube.

Innovative technology for long-term sustainability
The orientation, form and envelope of the building ensure a low level of energy consumption. The structurally essential pile foundation also uses geothermal energy to heat and cool the volume. In addition to this, the nearby Danube provides the basis for the intelligent “free cooling” climatic concept. In order to generate renewable electricity the team envisaged the positioning of a photovoltaic plant on the building’s green roof.
