Energy Globe Award Tirol

1st Prize, 2016

The well-known Energy Globe Award 2016 in the Tyrol Region has been awarded to the Faculties for Architecture and Engineering Science of the University of Innsbruck which were integrally designed by ATP architects engineers.

The jury was particularly convinced by the innovative approach of the architects. “This project is an excellent example of the energy that can potentially be saved as a result of high quality refurbishment. Every single thermal refurbishment project represents an important step on the way towards the goal of energy autonomy as set out in TIROL 2050” said a delighted Deputy Provincial Governor Josef Geisler as he presented the prize.

In 2012, following an EU-wide, open realization competition, ATP was commissioned with the redesign and the thermal, building services, electrical, fire protection and escape route-related refurbishment of the two building complexes and their ancillary areas. While the Faculty of Architecture was remodeled as an illuminated chameleon protected from heat and ultra-violet radiation by colored solar protection glass, the passive tower of the Faculty of Engineering Science convinces with its clear structure and automatically opening and shadable windows. The specially developed, automatically-controlled compound top-hinged windows, the innovative, ecological element façades from recycled material, an ingenious concept for the individual automatic control of the solar protection as a means of reducing the insolation and the daylight and presence-dependent control of the dimmable lighting are just four of the measures which enormously reduce energy consumption.

“This project once again demonstrates the unbelievable technical and architectural innovations which are possible in the areas of energy-efficient and sustainable building”, emphasized DI Bruno Oberhuber, the Managing Director of Energie Tirol. “Given that the refurbishment project was executed as part of the BIGMODERN modernization initiative, the meeting of innovative, ambitious sustainability and climate protection standards was the highest priority. This makes this a true model project which should be honored in such a way.”

The "Energy Globe World Award for Sustainability" is the most significant and best known energy prize worldwide. It is awarded to projects which use our resources sustainably, economically and sparingly and, wherever possible, make exemplary use of renewable energy. Every year around 800 projects and initiatives from every corner of the globe register for the prize which is awarded at the regional, national, international and continental level.
