Architecture for Milk & Whey

MILEI, Leutkirch

The integrated design of a new production building for the milk powder and lactose manufacturer MILEI involved an expansion of the existing plant in two construction phases. After a building for milk and whey processing processes, drying towers and storage facilities were constructed.

After an intense examination of the client's core process, we designed a highly efficient, modern factory. This corresponds to the client's desire for flexibility regarding expansion possibilities and function-optimized production processes. To achieve this, we chose a perfectly coordinated system that allows a flexible installation of the equipment.

Functional solutions meet aesthetic clarity
Our industrial planners in Innsbruck solved the structural engineering challenge of optimal load distribution, which allows for retrofitting components when needed. They also found solutions for the technical requirements of the various air qualities in different hygiene areas and for decentralized power supply during the conception phase.
The resource-saving energy concept covers the high energy demand of processing whey through heat recovery and condensate utilization. All solutions comply with the current and future international hygiene standards IFS Food.
In the design, the building clearly expresses the client's market leadership. The visually imposing volume of the structure is grounded by a lowered "skyline." A darker base zone envelops the complex. The up to 40-meter high towers of the production areas are clad in a micro-lined stainless steel facade. This creates a reflection of the surrounding landscape in the metallic skin, merging it with the building.

Integrated design with BIM
The quality of the planning resulted from an in-depth examination of the core process and the possibilities of integrated design with Building Information Modeling (BIM). This provided the client with reliable decision-making foundations early on, saving time and resources, and enabling a tailored, value-adding building – specifically a facility that plays a significant role in the international competition as a provider of high-quality food products. For MILEI, ATP's industrial construction expertise brought additional value: together with the equipment manufacturers, the planning team developed integrated overall solutions using the BIM model.
