Corporate design for E-Center
EDEKA Gaimersheim
The concept for the E-Center is based on design guidelines that we developed together with the client. The goal was to develop prototypical elements for the next generation of EDEKA supermarkets for the location in Gaimersheim, which can be located as needed at each store.

EDEKA Südbayern opened a new supermarket in Gaimersheim, which was designed with prototypical elements for a future generation of supermarkets. The concept for this 'E-Center' is based on design guidelines that we established together with the client. For the first time in the design, architectural design details that we developed as competition winners in a study initiated in 2012 were applied.
Elements of the new EDEKA supermarket
For the development of prototypical elements, we examined various aspects of retail. After thorough analysis, the components of Atrium, Plaza, Frontcooking, and externally the Super-Sign crystallized in the market interior:
• The transparent Atrium is designed as a 'utility garden.' It creates a visual connection between the different areas of the market.
• The Plaza serves as a central hub and orientation point in the market.
• The Frontcooking area and the fresh food counters invite customers to linger longer and dine.
• The EDEKA-Super-Sign has been redesigned together: in addition to the yellow entrance box, there is now a newly defined fresh food section, a bakery, and an exclusively designed wine world.
• The so-called "Green Wall" above the fruit and vegetable section and the fresh food counter is new.

Spatial Structure
The striking, polygonal shape of the building is zoned following simple means and its internal logic. Thus, dynamic and exciting spatial constellations emerged from a clear linearity, where each necessary component found its place appropriately. Customer flows and staff flows enter the market centrally through the main entrance.
Experience through Material and Light
Spatial constellations, materials such as concrete and wood, as well as lighting scenarios through state-of-the-art light technology create various atmospheres and areas inside. These are formulated into attractive and inviting experience worlds using a contemporary design language. The independently designed interior by EDEKA supports the coherent ensemble and thus emphasizes the prototypical characteristics of the EDEKA market.
DGNB Platinum
To achieve this highest possible award according to the DGNB system, special paths were taken. A green roof, battery charging stations for cars and e-bikes, as well as an in-house ice storage contributed to fulfilling the high demands both from the client and the sustainability certificate. In the course of the further detailed planning, we worked together with the commercial refrigeration planner and the technicians of the construction department of EDEKA South Bavaria to develop an economical heating and cooling concept for the entire building. In addition to commercial refrigeration, waste heat recovery and the ice storage are economically and meaningfully integrated.
