A Shopping Center of the Superlative

Celebration of the start of construction work on the HUMA Shopping Park

Vienna, 17th February 2015 – The foundation stone for the new HUMA Shopping Park in the district of Simmering has taken place in the presence of numerous special guests and Vienna’s Mayor Michael Häupl. ATP Vienna is responsible for the integrated planning of the center which was designed by Chapman Taylor. “Today’s retail architecture offers people high-quality environments” said the architect Horst Reiner, ATP partner in Vienna. “We try to use our experience to contribute to a building’s ability to sustainably enrich all our lives not only aesthetically but also economically and ecologically during its entire lifecycles.” The 50,000 square meters of leasable space will contain the over 90 shops, restaurant and service facilities of Vienna’s most modern shopping center.

The new building for the shopping center owned by the Munich-based Jost Hurler Group of Companies is being built on the site of a HUMA Shopping Park which was demolished in 2014 and will be realized on the 12-hectare site in a series of phases between now and 2017. A total of around 50,000 cubic meters of in-situ concrete will be poured and 5,200 tons of steel used as reinforcement. The building services will require the laying and connection of around 600 kilometers of cable. The site was prepared using 7,000 vibrated piles with a combined length of around 30,000 meters. The shopping center is being built on this base with the use of slab and point foundations. The basement slab is currently being poured and will have the size of around six football pitches.

At the celebration, Marcus Wild, CEO of SES Spar European Shopping Centers which has operated the HUMA Shopping Park for many years explained: “This foundation stone shows that we are laying a solid and sustainable foundation for the continuing success of HUMA in Simmering.” With modernity and élan we have created an innovative new center. “And that is all that it is about: super brands, a variety of restaurants and a pleasant atmosphere in which one will enjoy staying a little longer and meeting friends – all combined with tasteful architecture and super events.”
