HUMA – a building site of another dimension
Guided tour of Vienna’s largest retail sector building site
Vienna, 13th August 2015 – The guided tour enabled interested representatives of the media to gain their own impression of the progress of the construction of the HUMA Shopping Park. For the past eight months the traditional retail location in Vienna’s Simmering district has been home to the construction of the federal capital’s most modern shopping center which contains 50,000 square meters of newly built leasable space. The center was designed in an Integrated Design process by ATP architects engineers in cooperation with Chapman Taylor Düsseldorf.
“This is a building site of another scale. Thanks to our integrated site logistics we are precisely on timetable”, is the delighted reaction of Gerald Holy, ATP’s lead project manager. Since the start of building around 50,000 m3 of in-situ concrete have been poured and 5,200 tons of steel used as reinforcement. The site was prepared with the help of around 7,000 vibro displacement piles and around 1,600 square meters of the over 40,000 square meter floor plate was built in the form of a so-called “white tank” with a thickness of 60cm as protection against groundwater. The total floor plate has the size of six football pitches. The building services project required the laying of 600 km of cable – the distance between Vienna and Vorarlberg.
Between now and the opening in 2016 more than 90 shops, restaurants and service outlets will be created alongside 2,000 free parking spaces and 800 jobs. A further phase will be added to new center before the end of 2017. The owner is the Munich-based Jost Hurler Group of Companies and the project partner is SES Spar European Shopping Centers, which has operated the HUMA Shopping Park for many years.
