Children need space
Opening of a new educational center in the Tyrolean mountains.
Holzgau, 19.02.2016 – The municipality of Holzgau, in the Tyrolean mountain valley of the River Lech, opened its long-awaited new House for Children right on time to mark the beginning of the summer semester. The new educational center combines a primary school, kindergarten, nursery and childcare center under a single, powerful timber roof. As part of the opening ceremony the children surprised the gathered guests with a role-play about the creation of the new building.
The design by sphere by ATP won first prize in a competition and was implemented with very little alteration. The winning project for the next generation of inhabitants of the Tyrolean village also convinced the municipality due to the fact that the formally clear and functional building could also be executed according to the required cost and timetable parameters.
The interior of the building transmits a sense of warmth and well-being thanks to its use of natural materials. The traditional craft skills of the Lechtal were also employed in order to equip the educational center with local materials. Special attention was played to respecting the scale of the children. The powerfully barren mountains appear like images in the huge windows while light-filled spaces – which are generously open for adults yet full of small-scale variety for the children – become new places of communication. The building has space for every age group and will enable them to grow up together in an atmosphere adapted to state-of-the-art teaching ideas.
