Vienna, 9th July 2018 – “The new building perfectly enhances the defined sectoral focus on innovative technologies and is ideally suited for start-ups and companies involved with the internet-of-things, Industry 4.0 and smart production,” said Gerhard Hirczi, Managing Director of the Vienna Business Agency, at the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 2 of the Technologiezentrum Seestadt.
The building, which was designed by ATP Vienna, continues the story of the award-winning “aspern IQ” (Phase 1). It offers 6,800 square meters of additional rental space for offices and production in the area of Industry 4.0. The language of industrial architecture is knowingly used: The light-filled central foyer includes heavy-duty screed and fair-faced concrete. The metal façade adopts the materiality and color of the first phase and varies these to lend the new building a robust, industrial appearance. Working courtyards in the external areas illustrate the location’s theme of creative innovation.
“The structure of the building is unusual “, explained the Lead Project Manager Hannes Achammer, ATP Associate Partner in Vienna. “The Technologiezentrum opens up across the five-sided site like a fan. And we see any gaps in the urban development as an opportunity. By adapting the H-form of the first phase we are able to make optimum use of the area available. Our conclusion: Office buildings mustn’t always be rectangular in order to function perfectly.”
ATP Vienna was commissioned to integrally design Phase 1 on the basis of a competition-winning scheme back in 2009. Upon completion this was Austria’s first Plus-Energy office building and it received the EU Green Building Award and “Top Quality Building” award of the ÖGNB. In 2016 ATP Vienna won a further EU-wide, anonymous competition for the expansion (Phases 2 and 3).
