Urban Design Success

ATP Munich/Sontowski & Partner convince decision-makers with their urban concept on the edge of historic Villingen-Schwenningen.

Villingen-Schwenningen, 6th May 2020 – Good news from Munich!ATP – in cooperation with the project developer S&P Commercial Development GmbH, a member of the Sontowski & Partner Group – has come out on top in the planning development process for the “Altes Tonhallenareal” site in Villingen-Schwenningen in the Black Forest. The Town Council, which owns the site that has been vacant for 20 years, sees the new development as an opportunity to strengthen and inject life into the heart of the municipality and to establish an architecturally high quality connection with the old town. Out of a total of 15 submissions it was the concept of our Munich team led by the urban planner Florian Beck that convinced the expert committee with its “urban appearance and high quality architectural design.”

Attractive revitalization
ATP’s urban framework plan envisages a mixed, urban district that creates a harmonious connection between the old town and the banks of the River Brigach. “The urban perimeter block proposed in our project will help to inject life into the area at the foot of the old town walls. We see the mixed-use district as a major new urban asset for the historic town of Villingen-Schwenningen, says Florian Beck, Head of Design at ATP Munich.

In future, the site should be home to an ensemble of buildings: a three-story hotel with a food shop and a building with a drugstore and a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments above. The new passage between the buildings establishes connections with the pedestrian zone leading to the old town and with the promenade along the Brigach.
