New building for IMP

Opening of international research center in Vienna

Vienna, 1st March 2017 – Today marked the day after 18 months on site: A ceremony was held to open the new building of the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP). 200 scientists from almost 40 countries will continue their pioneering research here.

The new building puts IMP on an architectural par with other leading research facilities around the globe. Functionality and design were skillfully combined in a solution which offers high flexibility for modern research. The concept by ATP Vienna that was awarded 1st prize in the design competition is also targeted at encouraging communication and interaction.

“The layout and degree of visual contact in IMP ensure that one also meets people from other levels of the building” explains the architect Andreas Aichholzer, Lead Project Manager from ATP Vienna.

The building, which was integrally designed by ATP Vienna, incorporates a diverse range of meeting points and opportunities for exchange amongst the open working and laboratory areas which are organized around the five-story atrium. Even the open staircases are designed to promote communication. A bridge connects the IMP with the neighboring research institutions, a fact which further contributes to the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas.
