ATP wins 1st prize in the competition for a research campus

Klosterneuburg, 20th September 2022 – ATP has come out on top in the Europe-wide competition for the expansion of the Institute for Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg – Maria Gugging. This will enhance the Lower Austrian research campus in the form of a new, urban – and sustainable – structure.

In concrete terms, the Province of Lower Austria and the Federal Government organized a competition for the design of a new structure consisting of two laboratory buildings, an office building, a cafeteria, a learning center, and a parking garage. The brief for IST Austria was to use the expansion to create a setting that facilitates top teaching and research performance and sets international standards. “The laboratory of the future must be more than a scientific location. It must embody openness, communication, and sustainability. Our design is based on these high expectations,” says Dario Travaš, ATP Partner and Head of Design of ATP Vienna, explaining the central ideas behind the competition design. This is particularly notable for the architectural measures that seek to promote interdisciplinary exchange, such as ATP’s interpretation of the central reception as a climatic entrée with spray showers and water elements.

The jury report heaped particular praise on the high ecological quality of the design – which it honored by unanimously awarding the maximum possible number of points in the “sustainability category.
