The G3 Shopping Resort Gerasdorf was the destination of an Architectour excursion organized by the Arch+Ing Akademie entitled "Timber in Vienna".

Vienna, 26.04.2013. A group of architecture fans spent the afternoon looking at state-of-the-art timber buildings in Vienna on the tour organized by the Arch+Ing Akademie. Guided by Architect Heinz Lindner, ATP Vienna, the group also visited the G3 Shopping Resort Gerasdorf.

Often described as an “Eco Shopping Center”, the complex in Gerasdorf, to the north of Vienna was, at the time of its construction, the largest timber building project in Europe. More than 700 columns carry the almost 60.000 m2 of the dynamically sweeping timber roof as it nestles into the hilly landscape of the Lower Austrian Weinviertel. The spectacular timber roof construction is formed out of laminated timber beams of up to 80 meters in length and columns of up to 20 meters in height. All such elements as the solid timber roofing panels, laminated timber beams, reinforced concrete and steel columns are incorporated into a spatial system. The flat roof, which is also to carry a 3.000 m2 bird and insect habitat, incorporates 11.500 m3 of timber.
The carbon dioxide in the timber represents a saving of 23.000 tons. The G3 Shopping Resort Gerasdorf was subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment and built in an environmentally conscious manner. In June 2011 the G3 Shopping Resort Gerasdorf was named a klima:aktiv mobile project partner at the klima:aktiv mobile network conference in Vienna.
