Former Tonhallen Site, Villingen-Schwenningen, DE

1st prize in the urban planning development process for a mixed-use quarter

ATP Munich, in cooperation with the project developer S&P Commercial Development GmbH, a company of the Sontowski & Partner Group, has won the two-phase process organized by the Town Council of Villingen-Schwenningen for the development of the former Tonhallen site.

Downtown revitalization
The council judged that the project submitted by ATP best fulfilled its objectives for the development of the abandoned site between the old town and the River Brigach: the revitalization and strengthening of the town center and the creation of an architecturally attractive connection to the old town. The expert committee also emphasized the urban appearance and the high quality architectural design of the project.

Urban design concept
For Florian Beck, Head of Design of ATP Munich, the challenge in remodeling the site was to find a balanced relationship between public and private space, stimulation and recreation. Hence, ATP’s urban framework plan proposes a mixed-use quarter consisting of a hotel with a restaurant and a residential building with a food shop. The high architectural quality of the perimeter block solution establishes a green space between the buildings that is protected from the noise of the surrounding area and establishes an axis between the old town and the riverbank promenade. The hotel and restaurant open towards the river while areas of seating increase the attractiveness of the quarter.
