Cityscape of tomorrow in the HafenCity

Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier

One of the most exciting inner-city construction projects, the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, with its extraordinary dimensions and ambitious sustainability strategy, sets new standards. We supported this unique large-scale project, among other roles, as the lead architectural firm and main coordinator.

Large-Scale Project with an International Team
The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier plays a central role in the HafenCity, Europe's largest inner-city urban development project. An interdisciplinary team of architects, interior architects, and structural engineers from offices in Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, and Paris was involved in the large-scale project. To make the vision of an innovative district in every respect come true, we were responsible for coordinating the workflow of all teams involved in the project. Our tasks also included the execution planning of public open spaces, interior design of the retail areas, and the implementation of design changes.

Setting Today's Standards for Tomorrow
Under the agenda "Better Places 2030", the client, the Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Group, is committed to a high sustainability standard with positive ecological, social, and economic effects on the city and society. The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier served as an experimental and practical field for sustainable ideas, acting as the "city space of tomorrow". As the first large-scale project, the district received the new DGNB certification for sustainable construction sites. A holistic construction approach was generally pursued, where resources could be conserved, and materials with a high recycling content were used. In addition, all buildings in the project are certified with the BREEAM®-Excellent standard, and several office buildings also hold the DGNB Gold certificate.

Mixed-Use Concept
With the aim of creating a cosmopolitan and multifaceted place, a total of 14 buildings with different uses were created on the impressive total area of 419,000 m². The thoughtful mixed-use concept offers space for catering, culture, entertainment, trade, as well as living and working. A highlight is a cruise terminal with an underground bus station.
