Seechirurgie
Ambulatory Surgery Practice of the Hernia Center Switzerland in Thalwil
For the Hernia Center Switzerland, we planned a state-of-the-art ambulatory practice in a former commercial building. The new surgery center provides medical care at the highest level with a focus on the well-being of the patients.

In Thalwil on Lake Zurich, a new center for outpatient procedures was created: Seechirurgie combines specialized surgery, emergency care, and outpatient operations. The focus of the planning was on a patient-oriented spatial concept that combines high medical functionality with a personal atmosphere.
Transition from Office to Surgical Center
The particular challenge was to convert a former office building into a fully-fledged surgical practice without existing hospital infrastructure. The areas previously used as a conference center were stripped back to the raw structure; only the raised floor, heating, and shading systems remained.
The integration of extensive building systems for the operating rooms in a confined space was particularly demanding from a technical standpoint – including medical gases and a complex ventilation system. All other systems, including the new ventilation unit in the attic, were completely replaced and upgraded during the renovation.
Despite the comparatively small area, the planning and implementation, through the integration of a highly complex operating area with the corresponding infrastructure, posed an extraordinary challenge.

Maximale Funktionalität für Patientenwohl
The focal point of the planning process was a spatial concept that not only is medically efficient but also promotes the wellbeing of patients. The clear structure supports short distances, enables smooth workflows, and allows for flexible, needs-based use: Examination and treatment areas are clearly separated from each other. Single rooms and bunks around a central treatment area ensure the necessary privacy for patients. The operating room infrastructure is compactly organized - with separate access for the surgical team as well as directly assigned ancillary rooms such as changing rooms, material storage, or sterilization. The thoughtful arrangement of functional areas enables efficient processes and ensures hygienic safety in the sensitive surgical area. Radiation protection considerations had to be taken into account in the planning. The double operating room can be opened up to a large hall via a mobile partition when needed - for maximum flexibility during different procedures.
Clear, Meaningful Design
The high-quality, timeless interior design creates a pleasant atmosphere with a high standard of stay - for patients as well as for the medical staff. The contrast of white walls and ceilings with black built-in furniture gives the practice a clear, strong design language. A striking element is the spacious black reception and back office desk, which serves as a central design element.
Surgical Center of Expertise
A highly modern center for outpatient surgical procedures was created on approximately 580 m² - complemented by utility rooms. It includes examination rooms, a double operating room with two surgical stations, associated patient areas, as well as the necessary infrastructure with reception, waiting area, and staff zones.
