Renovating for Scientific Progress
University of Heidelberg, Pharmaceutical Laboratory Building
Comprehensively renovated, modernized, and functionally restructured: We transformed a university laboratory building from 1968 into a research facility of today.
Space for Modern Research
The University of Heidelberg commissioned the structural and technical renewal of an existing building to create the conditions for modern biological-pharmaceutical teaching and research. The goal was to enable efficient framework conditions for current scientific requirements.
Functional Restructuring for Efficient Processes
The concept involved using about half of the area for practical laboratories and the remaining space as a research area with integrated office and ancillary spaces. The functional organization was carried out in such a way that related areas could optimally share their resources. In order to enhance the efficiency of the research environment, a comprehensive renovation of the building was necessary. The measures also included the renewal of the facade, concrete repairs, and the full integration of technical systems.
Building during Operation
The building was modernized in three stages while the institute was in operation. The result is chemically and biologically oriented laboratory areas that meet the current requirements in teaching and research.
