Learning in Clusters

Renovation of the Primary and Middle School "Am Limes" in Kipfenberg

The primary and middle school in Kipfenberg is undergoing comprehensive modernization: The design by ATP Nürnberg creates a contemporary, modular, and child-friendly learning environment in a cluster system that delicately integrates into the topography and local surroundings.

The existing school complex in Kipfenberg was no longer functional or structurally contemporary. The goal is a modern, pedagogically well-thought-out scholastic environment that meets today's requirements for education, care, and community. The renovation and new construction measures are carried out in multiple phases – while the school is in operation.

Learning landscape in the "cluster system"
The pedagogical spatial concept is based on a clear cluster structure: each cluster consists of several classrooms, group and differentiation rooms, as well as an open learning area in the center. A special feature is the forecourts acting as "open classrooms" and creating a strong connection to the surrounding nature. Generous visual connections promote transparency and togetherness in everyday school life.
Thanks to the modular structure and the repetition of a consistent basic principle, a serial and cost-effective construction method is possible – a significant advantage for implementation in multiple phases.

High ecological standards
The design builds on the original building structure from 1972 and modernizes it appropriately. The new constructions are built using a timber hybrid construction with a timber slat facade and solid wood parapets on the upper floors. Large window areas provide natural lighting and ventilation. External sun protection with light-redirecting louvers as well as optional glare protection inside support a pleasant indoor climate. A green roof with PV modules contributes to the ecological quality.

Clear spatial structure
The new school complex consists of several staggered buildings along a linear access axis. This clear structure ensures good orientation, optimal lighting, and short distances in everyday school life. At the same time, it references the scale of the surrounding development and follows the natural terrain.
The ground floor forms the vibrant foundation of the school: here are specialized rooms as well as a two-field sports hall with its own entrance for non-school use. The upper floors house general classrooms, after-school care, dining hall, and the centrally located school kitchen. A central access axis, the "school street" on the 1st floor, runs through the entire building and transitions into a grandstand overlooking the sports hall.
