Campus for Top Research

Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA)

The well-known ISTA Campus in Klosterneuburg near Vienna has now gained an innovative, urban, and sustainable addition. Our 1st-prize-winning entry to the international competition embodies ISTA’s commitment to the future and the interdisciplinary exchange between researchers and students.

The campus for basic scientific research and postgraduate education, which has gained world-renowned status since its founding in 2009, is intended to provide an appropriate environment for up to 1,500 researchers by 2036. The identity of the institute, which enables excellence in study and research, is to be strengthened by the additional buildings, promoting scientific discourse.

Cutting-Edge Architecture for Cutting-Edge Research
Our design concept is based on the values of openness, communication, and sustainability practiced at ISTA. The focus is on architectural measures to promote interdisciplinary exchange as well as the high functionality and spatial efficiency of the buildings. The various research areas support the respective user requirements and are well interconnected. The surrounding natural environment is also integrated into the new area, ensuring a high quality of stay.

Pioneering Climate Neutrality
In collaboration with the ATP Research Company for Sustainable Design and Construction, ATP sustain, and in accordance with the measures of the ATP Green Deal, the use of sustainable building materials and resource-efficient solutions has been emphasized. The energy-efficient building envelope, geothermal energy, and the demand-optimized operation of the systems significantly contribute to maintaining a climate-friendly building ensemble, as does the use of wood composite ceilings, the climate-sensitive design of open spaces, the use of excavated material for terrain modeling, and the "Mixed-in-Place" method, which also reduces construction site traffic.

Dario Tracas, CEO of ATP Zagreb.

The laboratories of the future must be more than scientific locations. They must embody openness, communication, and sustainability. These are the expectations with which our project is aligned.

Innovative Environment for Research, Networking & Exchange
The campus extension includes two laboratory buildings, an office building, a cafeteria, a learning center, and a parking garage. The learning center and cafeteria are easily accessible, especially due to the stairs and ramps towards the south. A platform serves as a connection between the different functional areas and supports an intuitive orientation on the campus. From there, pathways, terraces, and stairways lead to all buildings. At the same time, it creates an attractive area for communication and exchange, serving users as a recreational space.
