Filter for Traffic Flows
Park & Ride Facility, Graz-Fölling
In tune with wind and traffic: We designed a facility that follows the terrain, allows airflow, and integrates harmoniously into the landscape as a folded, green structure. An architectural 'filter' for air, sound, and spatial transitions.

Following the competition win, we were tasked with planning the new Park & Ride facility. The requirement was for key design elements and the integration of the design into the landscape to be maintained within a new budget framework. Additionally, we had to design the facility in a way that harmonized with the local wind conditions – as the Föllinger Basin plays a central role in supplying fresh air to the city of Graz.

Shaped by the Terrain, Permeable to the Wind
For economic reasons, we opted for a proven parking deck system. We designed an open, two-story structure, whose two wings react to the topography and wind flow in terms of orientation and elevation. In a fluid dynamics analysis, we investigated the effects of the structure on the existing valley and slope wind systems. The simulation showed that our open design and aerodynamically folded roof shape hardly affect the airflow.
We created an elongated, green hill as a visual and sound barrier. The extensively green roof landscape of the two sections emerges from the ground, blending the stacked vehicles into the environment. The folded roof design follows the contour of the terrain. The construction is structured on the sides by a light slat structure inspired by layered wood. The inclination of the slats gives the impression of a solid structure from a distance, becoming increasingly transparent as the distance decreases. The slats' inclination supports air flow and acts as sun protection in the summer.

Modular Construction
The garage is designed as a two-hipped and two-story facility with centrally located driveways. It is a modular steel composite construction with a grid of 2.5 × 16.8 meters that can be expanded in the future. The roof construction is made of trapezoidal sheet metal and a green roof. To support the increasing trend towards electric mobility, we have added a power charging station for cars and bicycles to the building.
