Residential Oasis Instead of Shopping

Transformation of an Inner-City Shopping Arcade in Leverkusen

Residential Competition Urban planning and landscape

In the competition for the planned redevelopment of the building complex 'City C,' the design by ATP architects and engineers/ensphere received recognition. The interplay between architecture and landscaping here exemplifies a model project for sustainable urban development.

The most central residential project in Leverkusen
The "City C" in the heart of Leverkusen is a mixed-use building complex from the 1960s that has aged over the years. The planned demolition of individual, vacant commercial units is intended to make space for new residential and open space structures. As part of the competition, ATP developed a concept with ATP's in-house landscape architecture office ensphere that transforms the former shopping mall into a sustainable, flexible, and inclusive residential neighborhood.

The award-winning design organizes the site through a compact building structure with a clear distinction between public, semi-public, and private areas. The architecture creates clear spatial edges to the urban surroundings, while the landscape design deliberately creates retreat areas, quality spaces for stay, and connections to the environment. In the spirit of a future-oriented new construction, ATP aimed for a Passivhaus-standard building: a highly insulated building envelope, efficient building services, and a resource-efficient use of materials reduce the CO2 footprint and simultaneously enhance the quality of stay for the residents.

"There are clear urban references and appropriately proportioned outdoor spaces between the buildings. [...] The variety of apartment types largely meets the requirements. [...] The open space concept is characterized by a clearly defined zoning between public, semi-private, and private open spaces: The marketplace forms a suitable prelude to the city center. From the main path to the south, the entrances to the residential buildings and to the underground car park exits are logically accessed." Excerpts from the jury protocol
