German School Moscow
1st prize in architectural competition
ATP TLP Moskau won the architectural competition with a functional, child-friendly concept for a new school building and afternoon childcare facility. In both architectural and urban design terms the building doesn’t seek the limelight but, rather, focusses on the needs of the children while slipping harmoniously into the existing ensemble of buildings. Hence, the victorious concept is notable for its pragmatism and clear organization.
The building is functionally divided into two parts: The ground floor contains the childcare facility in which children can spend their afternoons and do their homework while the separate classroom block is located on the 1st and 2nd floors. A gymnasium in the basement offers room for sporting activities. Optimal conditions for teaching and learning are guaranteed by targeted measures such as generous, multifunctional spaces, modern classroom equipment (smart-boards, darkening systems), and adequate storage spaces. All surface materials are chosen in line with the function of the building: washable and magnetic colors on the walls, high-resistance flooring and non-slip tiles on the stairs.
The evaluation committee of the competition described the design as a “conceptual, functional, and economic success.”
