1st Prize Siska Shopping Centre, Ljubljana, Sl
The competition-winning scheme for a new shopping and district centre in the Slovenian capital meets the highest European sustainability standards.
The SISKA Shopping Centre has been conceived as a sustainable shopping centre. In addition to meeting the latest energy standards and taking into account the CO2 neutrality of materials the project pays special attention to the issue of social sustainability. It is planned that the building will be subject to BREEAM certification.
Located at the entrance to the city the shopping centre has excellent transport connections and, together with other buildings on the site, will play the role of a city gateway. Retail space has been sacrificed in the interests of creating a real public square which provides the link between the shopping centre and the life of the district which it serves. The area of the square is given back to the city and the possibility of accommodating such uses as a medical centre or fitness centre, kindergarten or library is being investigated. The “urban balconies” which offer a wide range of culinary options provide a context for the events which take place on the square. Visitors enter the centre itself via the jaw-like opening at the back of the square.
