Inauguration of 'Wing 4' at the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg
Close to the People: With the new extension building, the Evangelical Diakonie Hospital in Freiburg is receiving a modern healthcare center that further improves the quality of care, optimizes processes, and provides the spatial capacities necessary to meet the increased demand.
After around three years of construction, the extension building 'Wing 4' planned by ATP opened its doors to the public for the first time. It is the largest construction project in the 125-year history of the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg. The new building became necessary due to bottlenecks and capacity limits, in addition to significant renovation needs in the existing structures.
The extension of the Evangelical Diakonie Hospital in Freiburg shows how sophisticated healthcare buildings must be conceived today: functional, economical, user-oriented, and at the same time with a high quality of stay. Our team has taken on the task of translating the planning requirements into an actionable, coordinated, and quality-assured implementation. Crucial in this process was the close collaboration with the client, the specialist planners, and all project participants.

Healing Environment
The architectural concept follows the approach of Healing Environment: creating an environment that actively supports the healing process and enhances the physical and mental well-being of patients. The new building brings together central care areas under one roof: The new central emergency department responds to the recently increased numbers of patients; the maternity ward has been expanded from three to five delivery rooms. The two new comfort wards offer modern single and double rooms instead of the previous four-bed rooms. In addition, there is the new cafeteria "carpe diak," an event area with a rooftop terrace, and new facilities for the parents' school.
Well-structured and flexible floor plans with short distances between the emergency room, diagnostics, and treatment areas ensure efficient processes in the daily clinic routine; a well-thought-out light and color concept as well as high-quality materials also create a healing-promoting atmosphere. The building is consistently accessible without barriers - a basic principle that ensures quality of stay for all user groups.
Construction While in Operation
The extension building was constructed while the hospital was in full operation, one of the central planning challenges of the project that required close coordination of all involved parties throughout the entire construction period. Afterwards, the existing building is also planned to be extensively renovated and upgraded. The flexible grid system of the structural framework also provides the basis for the building to be adapted to changing medical requirements in the long term.
