How can cities prepare for rising temperatures? How can we shape urban spaces so that people can continue to live in them safely, healthily, and comfortably in the future? The increasingly frequent heatwaves across Europe are a stark reminder of how poorly our cities are prepared for extreme temperatures and weather events. This challenge is the focus of the ZDF documentary CITY VIBES: How Do We Cool Our Cities?, which showcases projects and approaches that help metropolitan areas remain livable in a changing climate.
Athens native Dimitra Theochari, Landscape Architect and Managing Director of ensphere (part of the ATP Group) in Hamburg, knows this challenge firsthand: Athens is one of the European cities most severely affected by extreme heat. In the documentary, she discusses the growing importance of climate-adapted open spaces and the positive impact of small green oases in densely built neighborhoods, as demonstrated through the EU-funded Cooling Havens Athens project.
The project shows that effective climate adaptation does not always begin with large-scale infrastructure measures. Instead, many targeted interventions – more trees, blue-green infrastructure, and water-sensitive design concepts – can together have a significant positive effect on the microclimate, biodiversity, and quality of life.
Heatwaves are no longer the exception. This makes it all the more important to view climate resilience as an integral part of planning – not as an additional measure, but as the foundation for livable cities.
