Vienna, 12.10.2009 – The Oval Hall of the Museums Quarter was the setting for a ceremonial unveiling: following the opening words of architecture critic and curator Lilli Hollein, the secret of the extravagant object of furniture was revealed. The elegant cream coloured sofa, which reminds one of a ships propeller, can comfortably seat six people. But on this evening there was room for many more: The twist: one has the sensation of extraordinary softness...
Dario Travas - Studio Head Architecture/Design of the Vienna office of ATP Architects and Engineers since 2005 – describes his design approach thus: “The Kornati group of islands inspired the formal concept behind this seating element which I developed specifically for use in such public spaces as shopping malls, urban squares or exhibitions.
The appearance of the sofa combines two basic thoughts - firstly my attempt to mirror as closely as functionally possible the flowing contours of the islands which was the inspiration behind the organic form and secondly the desire to offer the opportunity to react to a surrounding space from different angles – while seeking at the same time to respect the reduced but complex geometry.”
